Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such drugs should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
